The Spanish needed (had) to be early adopters to heavily fortified positions even to the point they'd make full on strong-holds from the very vessels themselves that would travel to these locations, right up to the late 1950's were the Spanish at war with themselves, some (vast sway) would argue these feuds continue even today.
