It was rediscovered in 1991 On May 1, 1998 by some annoymous explorer. In the cave, find an inscription on the cliff and the number 1901. Perhaps this is the autograph of the first explorer who came to this cave.

Most of the archaeological remains are in the cave entrance and the cave floor. It is the sediment of the Melania snail shell (a freshwater snail species) that has been carbonated.
On May 1, 1998, Thien Cung cave was officially opened to visitors and has since created a wave of tourists to Ha Long Bay.

The Legend Story to how it's known locally
The legend of Thien Cung Cave says that it was the ancient home of a Dragon King and his Queen. The Dragon King and Queen had a wedding at the heart of the cave, attended by all manner of magical and mythical creatures.

After the marriage, they had 100 children and lived in the cave while the King protected Halong Bay’s inhabitants from invaders. When their 100 children were grown, half of the children remained in Halong Bay as its guardians and protectors, and the other half left to help the rest of Vietnam.
