In 1889 the Austrian architect Emil von Förster won an international competition for a mineral bath with a hotel and started the construction of the building. After the Second World War, the large bathroom was restored and officially proclaimed as monument of culture of local importance.

The Sofia History Museum is housed in the former building of the Central Mineral Baths and is devoted to ethnography, archaeology, economy, and cultural life in Sofia and its region.

The permanent exposition is presented in eight halls with a total area of 2300 m2. It includes exhibits, covering a period of more than eight thousand years, from the Neolithic to the 1940s.

Regional History Museum, Sofia is located in one of the most beautiful and emblematic buildings of the capital city, the former Central Mineral Bathhouse, built in 1912. It is known among the residents of the city as the “Museum of Sofia”.

The small bathroom building was officially opened in 1908, and the large one - with two swimming pools, family baths, Roman baths - on May 13th 1913. A year later in 1914 a water healing treatment institute with special water facilities was opened in the northern wing of the bath.

The facilities were supplied with water from the mineral springs beneath the building. During the bombing of Sofia (1944) the small bathroom building was broken down, and parts of the large one were seriously affected.

Ancient cultural and communication complex “Serdica” combines areas with various purposes, divided into two zones. The “Largo” zone, situated underneath Nezavisimost Square, integrates the unearthed archaeological remains into a site for cultural events.
