Houska 1, 471 62 Doksy, Czechia
It is believed that the castle was built to keep the evil in. According to folklore, Houska Castle was constructed over a large hole in the ground which was known as The Gateway to Hell. It is fabled that the hole was so deep that no one could see the bottom of it.

Legend has it that half-animal, half-human creatures used to crawl out from the pit at night, and that black winged creatures used to attack locals and drag them down into the hole.

The cellar is nicknamed Satan's office, it even has a throne embellished with horns and a trident. A black robed faceless priest has been seen materializing in front of the throne and walking up the steps before vanishing. In 2009 TV's Ghost Hunters International team came to Houska Castle and carried out a paranormal investigation in their opinion the castle is definitely haunted.

Several places on Earth are thought to be entry portals to hell. A foul-smelling and gas-spewing crack in a sandstone hill some 47 kilometers north of Prague caused so much concern among people in the middle of the 13th century that they built a chapel to cover the chasm, and then put a castle around the chapel to protect it.

The chapel in the castle was built over the bottomless well or so the locals claim and it is here that the gateway to hell is said to be located. Investigators who have tried to find a bottom have not been able to find one in the well. The walls of the chapel are covered with some of the oldest paintings in Europe; most are of demons and dragons being slain.
Workers in the inner courtyard have heard voices coming from the chapel, on investigation no one is there. A Black figure seen on the upper floor is thought to be the ghost of an unknown male. It is believed that the Germans carried out their experiments in this room.

The location has had checkered history since then, but the chapel still stands at Houska Castle, guarding the earth from whatever lies beneath. Demons and other evil spirits can’t cross holy ground, so whatever was down in the smoking chasm has been trapped for eight centuries.

In 1999, the castle opened to the public and is still so to this day. Tourists can explore its interiors and pay a visit to the chapel which features frescoes and murals “including pictures of demon-like figures and animal-like beings”.

During the Thirty Years’ War, an officer from the occupying Swedish army became obsessed with the legends of Houska Castle, and according to local tales, he was killed by a local hunter when rumors spread that the officer was conducting black magic rituals in the chapel.

During the Second World War, the castle was occupied by the German Wehrmacht. They occupied it until 1945. There are claims that the Nazis used the castle to do medical experiments on people. Some even claim they used the castle’s negative powers. I’ll get into those powers later. But, there is no evidence for that.

There is this story about a young man who indeed agreed to be lowered into the pit. They put robes around him and lowered him down, but after a few seconds he started screaming in pure agony. He begged to be pulled up again. When the man was safely back up, the guards were startled by his appearance: he aged more than 30 years! His hair was all white and his face was badly wrinkled. He didn’t want to speak about the things he saw and he died a few days later from unknown causes.

Reports of paranormal experiences and encounters with evil have existed as long as the castle itself. Most experiences involve sightings of black winged demons that are seen flying inside the ancient castle. Others have reported a much less menacing blonde haired woman, who roams the dark corridors of the castle. The chapel inside Houska castle is directly on top of the pit that spawned the construction in the first place. Many people have heard screams and bone chilling moans coming from beneath the floor of the chapel. Others have heard what can only be described as the thud of a human body hitting the floor.

Being just 30 miles north of Prague, Houska Castle has attracted a good amount of attention for being a paranormal hot spot. Whether the hole it is built upon is truly the Gateway to Hell or not, there is no denying that supernatural evil lies behind it’s walls.

Houska Castle was built in the 13th century during the reign of Ottokar II of Bohemia. Although it was an early Gothic Castle, it was later renovated as a Renaissance Castle in the 16th century. At first glance, the small Castle seems normal and almost mediocre, however upon closer inspection one starts to notice a number of strange features. Perhaps the most apparent is that many of the castle windows are fake. If one looks closely, one can see that most of the windows are merely facades: glass panes behind which sturdy walls are built. Secondly, the castle has no fortifications, no water source, no kitchen, and, for years after it was constructed, it had no occupants.

This makes it clear that Houska Castle was not built as a protective sanctuary, a fortress or a residence, as is usually the case when a Castle or Fort is constructed. The location of the Castle is also peculiar. It is situated in a remote area surrounded by thick forests, swamps, and mountains. The location has no strategic value and is not situated near any trading routes. Another strange feature of the Castle is that many of its fortifications face inwards, rather than defensively outwards. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why, according to popular belief, the Castle was not built to keep people out, but to keep something in – to guard and act as a shield against something contained inside it.
Even the Road entering this fortress makes no sense as it breaks regular vantage traditions of fortitude
Gps Coordinates / 50.4895702,14.6275428
The castle is now officially considered a haunted mansion occupied by many ghosts and otherworldly creatures, including “a bullfrog/human creature, a headless horse, and an old woman”, in addition to remains of “demonic beasts who escaped the pit”.
